Communication & Patient Expectations in Osteopathic Practice
Effective communication is one of the most important clinical skills in modern musculoskeletal care. While manual therapy and rehabilitation strategies remain essential components of osteopathic treatment, the way clinicians communicate diagnoses, explain treatment plans, and set patient expectations can significantly influence patient engagement, adherence, and clinical outcomes.
This CPD lecture explores the evidence surrounding therapeutic communication, patient expectations, and the clinician–patient relationship within musculoskeletal practice. Drawing on current systematic reviews, clinical trials, and guideline recommendations, the session examines how empathic communication, therapeutic alliance, and clear patient education contribute to safe and effective care.
Participants will learn how communication influences pain perception, rehabilitation adherence, and recovery expectations, as well as how to integrate these principles into everyday osteopathic consultations. The lecture also discusses important safety considerations, including the communication of red flags, appropriate imaging decisions, and interprofessional referral when necessary.
By the end of this session, clinicians will have practical strategies for improving patient understanding, strengthening therapeutic alliance, and supporting realistic recovery expectations in clinical practice.
