Practitioner Burnout: Maintaining Sustainable Clinical Practice
Burnout is an increasingly recognised challenge across healthcare professions, including osteopathy and allied health. Sustained clinical workloads, emotional labour, and the demands of private practice can gradually contribute to practitioner fatigue, reduced professional satisfaction, and potential impacts on patient care.
This CPD lecture explores the current research on practitioner burnout, including prevalence, contributing factors, and strategies that may support long-term professional wellbeing. Drawing on systematic reviews and high-level evidence from the healthcare literature, the lecture examines how burnout develops, how it may influence clinical performance, and how clinicians can recognise early warning signs.
Participants will explore practical strategies for maintaining sustainable clinical practice, including workload management, reflective practice, professional boundaries, and organisational factors that influence practitioner wellbeing.
The lecture also considers practitioner wellbeing through an osteopathic lens, discussing how the profession’s principles of body unity and self-regulation can inform strategies for maintaining physical and psychological resilience within clinical practice.
This course is designed for osteopaths and allied health professionals seeking to better understand practitioner burnout and develop practical approaches to supporting safe, sustainable patient care.
